The Center for the Studies of Objects Near the Earth, an organization linked to the North American space agency Nasa , is very aware this weekend of the asteroid Apollo 2021 PT, which will approach the Earth during the early hours between this Saturday and Sunday . According to the forecasts of the astronomers who are doing the monitoring, in Spain it will happen around 02.52 in the morning .
The asteroid, classified as “potentially dangerous”, is medium in size, with a diameter of between 175 and 240 meters, and belongs to the Apollo category (this is the name of asteroids whose orbit around the Sun is larger than that of the Earth It travels at a speed of about 7,000 kilometers per second and will pass 4,908,499 kilometers from our planet.
The chances of it colliding with Earth, however, are very remote. It is considered “potentially dangerous” because its trajectory is close enough to Earth, but not dangerous . Asteroids are celestial bodies, which move in orbits, either of little or considerable eccentricity around the Sun, and whose inclination on the elliptical can be of any angle. “Some asteroids and comets follow orbital paths that take them much closer to the Sun than usual and, therefore, to the Earth,” NASA explains in a statement.
These asteroids are constantly monitored by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, using an automated system called the Sentry . The last one that approached Earth was detected last April.
