About 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, 4.9 degree earthquake is felt in Melilla, Malaga, Granada and Almería. The tremor has been noticed especially in the coastal areas as well as in Jaén.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 with an epicenter in Alboran was clearly felt this Saturday in Melilla and in several towns in the provinces of Malaga, Granada, Almería -especially in the coastal area- and in some inland areas, such as Jaén.

According to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the earthquake was registered at 1:20 p.m. and it has been perceived in Melilla with an intensity III-IV, where many people have taken to the streets scared.

Also in numerous towns on the coast of Granada, Malaga and Almería the earthquake has been noted, with a lower intensity, level II-III, according to the first information from the IGN.

This body is aware that the earthquake has been perceived in some parts of the interior of the provinces of Malaga, Granada and Jaén.

Initially it has been rated with a magnitude of 4.5 degrees by the IGN, which a few minutes later has raised it to 4.9 in the revised calculation.

Multiple replicas
According to the IGN, there have been several aftershocks, which have been perceived by the population, of magnitudes 3.1 and 3.4.

This earthquake, which has lasted for several seconds, is one of the most important of the entire series of seismic movements that have been taking place in Alboran in recent months.

As reported by the Autonomous City of Melilla, the 112 emergency service has not registered calls referring to incidents, although it has some informative calls stating the earthquake or asking about its magnitude.
