Qualcomm, the manufacturer of the Snapdragon processors used by most Android brands, has presented its first mobile, thanks to a collaboration with Asus that has allowed it to be completed with the latest technology.
This is a very special occasion, as the Qualcomm name often goes unnoticed by the average user; only if we look closely will we find it in promotional material or component listings. Typically, Qualcomm focuses on developing SoCs (System-on-chip), which include both the processor and other components such as 4G and 5G connectivity.
But now comes the “Smarthpone for Snapdragon Insiders” , a very long name that we can probably substitute for “the Snapdragon mobile”. It is the first complete mobile of the company, but you probably will not be able to buy it. It was born thanks to an alliance with Asus, which this year launched the Zenfone 8 and the ROG Phone 5, and at first glance it resembles the latter and shares some technical aspects. Asus will also handle the sale and distribution.
Of course, the processor is a Snapdragon 888 , the most powerful Qualcomm will offer until the next release of the Snapdragon 888+. That also means that it has 5G connectivity, thanks to the X60 modem, as well as support for the new Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.
New Snapdragon 888+ announced, the processor that will carry your next high-end mobile
This Snapdragon mobile is basically a demonstration of the technologies developed by Qualcomm, such as the Quick Charge 5 fast charge of up to 65 W for the integrated 4,000 mAh battery. It also has Snapdragon Elite Gaming features to improve performance in our video games.
For the sound, it has Qualcomm aptX Adaptive, to improve the quality of wireless audio , and the speakers have Snapdragon Sound Technology with different profiles for all types of content, such as music, video games or cinema. As for security, it is perhaps surprising that the fingerprint reader is on the back of the device, using a Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2. Most new and powerful phones have the reader on the screen or on the side.
The rest of the characteristics are those of a gaming mobile, with a 6.78-inch screen of FHD + resolution and a refresh rate of 144 Hz; the technology is AMOLED, and it covers 111.23% of the DCI-P3 color gamut with a brightness of 1,200 nits.
For the cameras, three sensors have been chosen at the rear; the main one is a 64 MP Sony IMX686 , the wide angle is a 12 MP Sony IMX363, and the telephoto is 8 MP. Asus software is responsible for image processing.
The name “Smarthpone for Snapdragon Insiders” says it all. This is a mobile for company enthusiasts, who are willing to pay the 1,299 euros it will cost in Europe ; in return, they will receive a “premium experience”, not only in the packaging, but also with the inclusion of high-end wireless headphones that use Snapdragon audio technology, a 65W charger, a case protector, and various cables. Braided USB.
